How the VAT estimate works
This is an arithmetic VAT tool: it adds a selected rate to a net amount or extracts the VAT element from a VAT-inclusive amount. The user remains responsible for choosing the legally correct treatment of the supply.

Questions about VAT
Are zero-rated and exempt supplies the same?
No. A zero-rated supply is taxable at 0% and normally carries input-tax recovery rights; an exempt supply can restrict input-tax recovery and is excluded from taxable turnover.
Can the rate be chosen from the customer type alone?
Usually not. Liability depends on the exact supply, place, customer and statutory conditions, so check HMRC’s sector guidance when uncertain.
About this estimate
Whether a supply is standard-rated, reduced, zero-rated, exempt or outside scope depends on the transaction.
